How Many Real Attractive Fixed Points Can A Polynomial Have?

We prove a complex polynomial of degree n has at most ⌈n/2⌉ attractive fixed points lying on a line. We also consider the general case.

How many weights can a linear code have?

We study the combinatorial function L(k, q), the maximum number of nonzero weights a linear code of dimension k over Fq can have. We determine it completely for q = 2, and for k = 2, and provide upper and lower bounds in the general case when both k and q are ≥ 3. A refinement L(n, k, q), as well as nonlinear analogues N(M, q) and N(n,M, q), are also introduced and studied.

How Many Entries of A Typical Orthogonal Matrix Can Be Approximated By Independent Normals? Short title: Normals Approximate Matrix Entries

We solve an open problem of Diaconis that asks what are the largest orders of pn and qn such that Zn, the pn× qn upper left block of a random matrix Γn which is uniformly distributed on the orthogonal group O(n), can be approximated by independent standard normals? This problem is solved by two different approximation methods. First, we show that the variation distance between the joint distrib...

How many species have mass M?

Within large taxonomic assemblages, the number of species with adult body mass M is characterized by a broad but asymmetric distribution, with the largest mass being orders of magnitude larger than the typical mass. This canonical shape can be explained by cladogenetic diffusion that is bounded below by a hard limit on viable species mass and above by extinction risks that increase weakly with ...

Perspective. How many women have osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is widely viewed as a major public health concern, but the exact magnitude of the problem is uncertain and likely to depend on how the condition is defined. Noninvasive bone mineral measurements can be used to define a state of heightened fracture risk (osteopenia), or the ultimate clinical manifestation of fracture can be assessed (established osteoporosis). If bone mineral measur...
